(back to Still Water Dharma Topics)
Dear Still Water Friends,
This Thursday evening, we will have a special program with Sr. Alice Zachmann. Sr. Alice is a Catholic nun, the founder of the Guatemala Human Rights Commission/ USA, and the recipient of many international human rights awards.
Concerned about the plight of the Guatemalan people and their persecution by the military, in 1982 Sr. Alice worked with others to create the Guatemalan Human Rights Commission. Serving as the Director of the Commission for more than twenty years, Sr. Alice brought public attention to the human rights situation in Guatemala and coordinated urgent actions in emergencies on behalf of human rights leaders and others suffering harassment and intimidation.
In recent years she has continued her human rights work with the Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition International. TASSC International is the only organization founded by and for survivors of torture. It was established in 1998, on the guiding principles that torture is a crime against humanity and that survivors are the strongest and most effective voice in the campaign to end the practice of torture.
Sr. Alice will share with us how her human rights work and her spirituality have supported each other and nourished her life. I hope you can join us.
The program with Sr. Alice will begin after our meditation period. The best times to join us are just before the first sitting at 7 pm. Just before the walking meditation at 7:25. Or at the beginning of our second sitting at 7:35.
Warm wishes,
Mitchell Ratner
