The precepts encourage the practitioner to abstain from five ways of acting that create suffering for the practitioner and others: killing, stealing, engaging in sex with inappropriate partners, lying, and using alcohol and other intoxicants. In deciding to abide by them, the practitioner essentially says: “These practices are the best place for me to develop as a human being. They represent wholesome teachings for me by which I aspire to live.”In the Plum Village tradition, Thich Nhat Hanh has reformulated the precepts for our challenging modern lifestyles in the form of the Five Mindfulness Trainings. They represent the guardrails on the path of mindfulness that are designed to preserve and encourage our mindfulness practice. In early January 2018, there will be a transmission ceremony where we can commit, both to ourselves and to our community, to study, learn from, and practice the Trainings.A study group will meet three times this fall to both prepare for the January transmission ceremony and to deepen our understanding of the Five Mindfulness Trainings and their relation to mindfulness. You do not need to expect to participate in the transmission ceremony to join the study group: studying the Trainings has its own independent benefits as we examine how our live choices relate to our mindfulness practice and vice versa. During the study group, we will look deeply at each of the Trainings to see what resonates with us or what gives us pause. We will also discuss what it means to commit to study and practice the Trainings as opposed to taking them as inviolable commandments. You are welcome to join us for these three sessions to explore the Trainings more deeply. The sessions will be facilitated Dharma discussions about the Trainings. The study group is free of charge and open to the public, but registration and a commitment to try to attend all three sessions are requested. In addition, donations to the Still Water Mindfulness Practice Center to help support our mindfulness community would be appreciated. Please register here. If you are interested, please register and we will let you know whether a place has opened. ***– A Fall-Winter "Deepening Our Practice" Group for Experienced Practitioners –Register nowThe core of the Buddhist tradition concerns the well-lived life. How do we reduce our suffering and the suffering of those around us? And, how do we live our lives joyfully, mindfully, and compassionately? In this Deepening our Practice class we will explore these questions as we look deeply into two Buddhist sutras. The Sutra on Knowing the Better Way to Live Alone, the Bhaddekaratta Sutta, is a discourse from the early teachings of the Buddha. Thich Nhat Hanh explains in his commentary that the sutra teaches “that we must struggle to get back our freedom, to be able to live the moments of our daily lives deeply. … ‘Living alone’ means living to have sovereignty over ourselves, to have the freedom that comes from not being dragged away by the past, not living in fear of the future, and not being pulled around by strong emotions caused by the circumstances of the present.”The Diamond Sutra is an early Mahayana Sutra especially treasured in the Chan and Zen traditions. Searching for a way to describe the inexplicable “interbeingness” of all things, the sutra asks the practitioner to reconsider what he or she believes to be real. As Thich Nhat Hanh elucidates, the Sanskrit name of the sutra, Vajracchedika Prajñaparamita, reveals its aspiration:Vajracchedika means “the diamond that cuts through afflictions, ignorance, delusion, or illusion.” …  Prajñaparamita means “perfection of wisdom,” “transcendent understanding,” or “the understanding that brings us across the ocean of suffering to the other shore.” Studying and practicing this sutra can help us cut through ignorance and wrong views and transcend them, transporting ourselves to the shore of liberation. In our consideration of these sutras, we will read Thich Nhat Hanh’s translation and commentaries from the collection Awakening of the Heart. Core readings will include selections from The Diamond Sutra: The Perfection of Wisdom by Red Pine, The Diamond Sutra: Transforming the Way We Perceive the World by Mu Soeng, and other translations and commentaries. The class will meet alternately in Takoma Park and in Columbia, from 1-3:30 pm on eight Sundays (Oct 28, Nov 11, Dec 2, Dec 16, Jan 13, Jan 27,  Feb 10, and Feb 24).Throughout the class we will be also exploring our own aspirations and the circumstances in daily life that most challenge us. Between sessions, participants will support each other in groups of 2-4 participants, meeting in person or virtually, at a time that is agreeable to the members of each group. The class will be facilitated by Mitchell Ratner, Still Water’s Senior Teacher. To ensure that there is a shared understanding of mindfulness practice in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh, we ask that participants have at least six months of experience with mindfulness meditation gained through regular participation at the Still Water MPC or at another practice center. The recommended mindfulness practice commitment is daily sitting and walking meditation, along with other practices that nourish mindful attention throughout the day.If you have questions about whether your preparation is appropriate, or other questions about the study and practice groups, please email Still Water at Info@StillWaterMPC.org, or call 301 270-8353.The Deepening Our Practice Groups are offered in accord with the spirit of Dana. We can change the texture of our lives, no matter what has come before. It is true that all that we feel, think, and encounter is influenced by our ancestors, parents, early childhood, schooling, friends, media, and events in our lives. However, if we can clearly see this process of conditioning and observe our mental states, rather than being overwhelmed by them, we can transform our experience of life. Beginning Anew as an Intention arises from this understanding. Thich Nhat Hanh explained in a 1998 Dharma talk:The Buddhist teaching on Beginning Anew is very clear: "The unskillfulness comes from our mind, and the unskillfulness can be transformed by our mind. If the transformation happens in your consciousness, then the unskillfulness will disappear as a reality in the manifested world. The mind is like a painter." This is the Buddha’s teaching, that the mind is a painter. The painter can paint anything, and the painter can erase everything.Beginning Anew, as a Practice, helps us look deeply into the habitual responses that have created suffering for ourselves and others. The skillful use of the practice nourishes acceptance, warmth, and loving-kindness. In the Plum Village tradition Beginning Anew Ceremonies are used to cultivate harmony and resolve conflict in relationships, families, and communities. When practiced with others in a ceremony, the Beginning Anew practice proceeds through three or four steps: appreciating the actions of others that have relieved suffering or brought joy to others, often called Flower Watering expressing our beneficial regrets: acknowledging what we have said or done that might have contributed to someone else’s suffering sharing our hurt and suffering: making known to others that what someone has said or done might have created difficulties for us or contributed to our suffering often, but not always, there may be a final step, making a request or offering steps towards a resolution of the conflict. In our day together, we’ll take time to refresh and center ourselves through mindful breathing, sitting, walking, and eating. We will explore beginning anew as an intention, practice beginning anew with ourselves, and role-play the steps of beginning anew with someone with whom we may be having difficulties. The day of practice will be led by Mitchell Ratner, Eric Donaldson, Shawna Donaldson, Barbra Esher, and Gene Klinger. We’ll meet in the Octagon at Blueberry Gardens in Ashton, Maryland. The suggested dana (donation) is $50-$80. Dana is a gift from the heart that supports the community and the teachings; please feel free to contribute less or more depending on your circumstances. We hope you can join us! The trainings remind us of our deep aspiration to live every day with a calm mind and an open heart. They provide invaluable guidelines for mindful living. The trainings enter us most deeply when we receive them formally, in a Five Mindfulness Trainings transmission ceremony. This transmission publicly joins us with the tradition of mindfulness practice passed from teacher to student in an unbroken line from the Buddha, through many Indian, Chinese and Vietnamese teachers, through Thich Nhat Hanh, to us.On Saturday, January 5, 2019, the Washington DC area mindfulness communities (including the Still Water MPC, MPC of Fairfax, Washington Mindfulness Community, the Opening Heart Mindfulness Community, and the Boat of Compassion Sangha) will join together to transmit to their practitioners the Five Mindfulness Trainings. If you are associated with the Still Water MPC and would like to receive the Five Mindfulness Trainings in January, or would like to discuss the possibility of receiving the trainings, please email us at info@StillWaterMPC.org.Even if you will not be receiving trainings, we encourage you to attend the ceremony. It is a joyous and heartening event and your presence will support those who are receiving trainings. The ceremony will be held at the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Fairfax (2709 Hunter Mill Road, Oakton, VA 22124), from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon and will include an informal tea.The text of the Five Mindfulness Trainings is available here. Participants are encouraged to make a donation to the Still Water MPC that accords with the promptings of their heart and their personal circumstances. The tax-deductible contributions are used to support the community and its projects. All donations are appreciated. The suggested donation range for this four-month study and practice group is $160 to $320. Please feel free to contribute less or more depending on your circumstances.Register nowA page from the Diamond Sutra, printed in the 9th year of Xiantong Era of the Tang Dynasty, i.e. 868 CE. If we are not mindful we are split, and we are disconnected from the life energy that is in us and in the world.During this 90-minute workshop we will explore mindfulness as a daily practice and become familiar with conscious breathing, sitting meditation, and walking meditation. This workshop is co-sponsored by Crossings, and will be taught by Mitchell Ratner.Mitchell has been a lay member of the Tiep Hien Buddhist order since 1993, and in 2001 received the Dharmacharya (meditation teacher) transmission from Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. A founder of the Still Water Mindfulness Practice Center, since 1994 he has taught classes and workshops integrating mindfulness meditation with work, meaningful relationships, and the challenges of everyday life.Have a friend or colleague who might be interested? 868 CE.
