Discussion date: Thu, Aug 24, 2006 at our weekly Thursday evening practice

Dear Still Water Friends,

This Thursday evening, we will have a specialprogram with Sr. Alice Zachmann. Sr. Alice is a Catholic nun, thefounder of the Guatemala Human Rights Commission/ USA, and therecipient of many international human rights awards.

Concerned about the plight of the Guatemalan peopleand their persecution by the military, in 1982 Sr. Alice worked withothers to create the Guatemalan Human Rights Commission. Serving as theDirector of the Commission for more than twenty years, Sr. Alicebrought public attention to the human rights situation in Guatemala andcoordinated urgent actions in emergencies on behalf of human rightsleaders and others suffering harassment and intimidation.

In recent years she has continued her human rightswork with the Torture Abolition and Survivors Support CoalitionInternational. TASSC International is the only organization founded byand for survivors of torture. It was established in 1998, on theguiding principles that torture is a crime against humanity and thatsurvivors are the strongest and most effective voice in the campaign toend the practice of torture.

Sr. Alice will share with us how her human rightswork and her spirituality have supported each other and nourished herlife.  I hope you can join us.

The program with Sr. Alice will begin after ourmeditation period. The best times to join us are just before the firstsitting at 7 pm. Just before the walking meditation at 7:25. Or at thebeginning of our second sitting at 7:35.

Warm wishes,
