Dharma Topic: Practicing in the Midst of Turmoil

Discussion date: Thu, Aug 25, 2005 at our weekly Thursday evening practice

Dear Still Water Friends,

Dear Still Water Friends,

Julia Jarvis, Ann Baker and Abbie Chessler have just returned from a six-day retreat with Thich Nhat Hanh. The theme of the retreat was "Practicing Together in the Midst of Turmoil." This Thursday evening, August 25, Julia, Ann and Abbie will share some of their experiences from the retreat. We will also listen to an excerpt from one of Thay’s dharma talks. In this talk he tells the story of his return to Vietnam after 40 years in exile. His story is an example of how – by engaging deeply in loving speech and loving action – he was able to begin to transform the fear, wrong perceptions and misunderstandings of the Vietnamese government towards himself and the practice. This message was repeated throughout the retreat to help us understand transformation on a personal level and into world beyond ourselves.

You are invited to join us this Thursday evening for our sitting and our discussion. The best times to join us are just before the first sitting at 7 pm; at 7:25, at the beginning of walking meditation; and, at 7:35, at the beginning of the second sitting. (To allow others to maintain concentration and continuity, we ask that practitioners not enter during the walking meditation.)

Warm wishes,

Julia, Ann, and Abbie
