A Six-Session Introduction to Mindfulness and Meditation
Taught by Scott Schang at Crossings in Silver Spring, Maryland
There is no enlightenment outside of daily life. — Thich Nhat Hanh
Mindfulness practice allows us to refine our relationship with the joys and stresses of living. By cultivating a relaxed state of awareness and observing directly our bodily sensations, emotions, and thinking, practitioners become more mindful of their own actions and reactions. This creates more space for calm, joy, compassion, equanimity, and loving-kindness in our daily lives.
Mindfulness and meditation are surprisingly simple yet far from easy. This six-week experiential class will explore being present with our thoughts, emotions, sensations, and the world around us in order to meet life with more intention and openness. Intended for both new and experienced practitioners, the class will explore sitting and walking meditation, mindful eating, mindful movement, and other techniques to help reduce stress and cultivate mindfulness. Selected readings will help explain and reinforce the practices.
The course is facilitated by Scott Schang, a long-time mindfulness practitioner, member of the Order of Interbeing in the tradition of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, and a member of the Still Water Mindfulness Practice Center in Silver Spring.
Offered by the Still Water Mindfulness Practice Center and Crossings: A Center for the Healing Traditions (www. crossingshealing.com). Crossings is located in downtown Silver Spring at 8720 Georgia Avenue and is easily accessible from Metro and by bus. More information on transportation and parking is available here.
A donation of $120 for the six-session course is suggested. All donations go to support the Still Water Mindfulness Practice Center, a § 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Participants may donate a lesser amount if $120 would create a hardship.
